Matador MRAP SUVNieuws_nl

The Matador MRAP was developed as a private venture by the Paramount Group of South Africa. Development commenced in 2006 and first prototypes were completed in 2007. Trials took place at Paramount's research and development base in South Africa. Mobility trials took place in United Arab Emirates.

In 2009 Azerbaijan ordered 25 of these ambush protected vehicles. Construction of these vehicles is carried out in Azerbaijan under license from knock-down kits and key subsystems, supplied by the Paramount Group sources. First production Matadors were completed in 2010. Final deliveries are expected in 2011.

The baseline configuration of the Matador is an armored personnel carrier. However more specialized versions, such as command post vehicle, engineering vehicle or armored ambulance, logistic support vehicle, recovery vehicle and mortar carrier are expected to follow in the future. Vehicle has a payload capacity of 4 500 - 5 000 kg. It can be used for military and peacekeeping operations in urban and less built-up areas.

The Matador MPV has a traditional V-shaped hull, with the novelty of double-skin spaced armor design. This armored vehicle withstands a 21 kg TNT blast (three anti-tank mines) under any wheel or 14 kg TNT blast (two anti-tank mines) under the hull. It has been verified during trials in South Africa. It is the only vehicle in it's weight class with such high level of protection. The Matador can also survive explosion of 155-mm HE round at 60 m range. All-round protection is against 7.62-mm NATO armor-piercing rounds. Protection level can be further increased by add-on armor kit. NBC protection system is proposed as an option.

This ambush protected vehicle provides seating for a crew of two plus 12 passengers. Occupants enter and leave the vehicle via the rear door or roof hatches. Windows have built-in firing ports, so occupants can fire their individual weapons. Also various weapon stations can be installed.

The Matador ambush protected vehicle is powered by a Cummins turbocharged diesel engine, developing 296 hp. Engine is located at the front of the vehicle, leaving the remainder clear for the crew and passengers. The Matador has a full-time all-wheel drive. Vehicle is fitted with a central tyre pressure system, which allows to manage tyre pressure, while driving over various types of terrains. Another MAN diesel engine, as well as auxiliary power unit and self-recovery winch are optional. This ambush protected vehicle is airportable.

The Matador MRAP is also proposed with 6x6 configuration. Furthermore a 8x8 version is also in the concept phase and will be developed if there is firmer market demand.

It is worth mentioning, that Paramount Group also offers a smaller Marauder mine resistant ambush protected vehicle, specially developed for urban warfare.
